27 February 308 AD, marks the date of the Edict of Thessalonica, when Catholic Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire.
The artwork symbolically represents the suppression of the feminine figure, once celebrated as sacred and an integral part of the divine in pagan religions.
It combines historical and symbolic references: the background of modern cityscapes rendered as mosaics highlights the persistence of patriarchal values in contemporary society, while figures inspired by historical frescoes and excerpts from the edict emphasize the influence of religious norms in shaping power and societal roles.
This digital illustration was partly inspired by the reading of The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, which gave me a creative hint to express through images my long-standing interest in the intersection of women, religion, and Western civilization, and in how cultural and spiritual norms have shaped female identity and expression.
Intended for an adult audience, the illustration is suitable for publishing, mystical or esoteric products, and contexts where evocative and conceptual imagery is valued. Themes of femininity, spirituality, and historical reflection intertwine to create a visually striking and conceptually meaningful work.
