Not Every Flop Is a Bad Thing
This illustration about the creative process comes from an experience I have found myself going through again and again: making mistakes… and letting the error guide me instead of resisting it.
Here, an ink bottle falls and irreparably stains a drawing. In an instant, the whole search for perfection seems to vanish. What should be done at that point? Tear the sheet? Get angry? Or give that random event a chance?
The mistake is a point that cracks the rigid slab of perfectionism, opening a fissure and releasing the fantastic microcosm that lived beneath it: anthropomorphic animals, mermaids, little spirits and odd creatures chasing one another in an explosion of imagination.
Other illustrators suggested that I try playing with mistakes. I did, and those very unexpected events became the turning points that helped me unlock myself, look away from the fear of making mistakes, and rediscover a more spontaneous and wild freedom of experimentation.
